Did you know that women were not allowed to compete in the ski jump at the Olympic Games until 2014, although men had been competing in the ski jump since 1924? American Sarah Hendrickson was the first ever woman to ski jump in the Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She is from Park City, Utah and is 20 years old. Here is what Sarah told The Girl’s Guide to Swagger about her sport.
Why I love my sport
I love ski jumping because it’s unique. Not many people in the US know what ski jumping is but once they hear about it they love it. I was attracted to the feeling of flying when I first started and I am addicted to the adrenaline rush every day.
How you got started
I started because of my brother. He’s a hero to me and I always wanted to be like him growing up!
Overcoming fears
I fear failure. I am a very dedicated person but sometimes it’s hard to accept that failure happens. Failure is only a problem if you don’t learn from the mistake. And as long as you’re doing your absolute best that is all anyone can ever ask for.
Advice to girls and women who are interested in this sport
I grew up in a sport with mainly men and a male dominated sport. But I have learned that if you want to accomplish a dream with dedication and hard work it is possible. Find something you love and chase it!
